Art Department News
MAY 13, 2025: Congratulations to Whitney Point High School seniors Ryan Heath, Kimberly Peterson, and Lilly Couch-Vargas for outstanding presentations of their visual art portfolios at this year’s Portfolio Project. All three students earned a “Distinguished” score after meeting with their adjudicators at Binghamton University.
The Portfolio Project is an initiative of NYSATA (New York State Art Teacher’s Association) that was developed in cooperation with the New York State Education Department. It is an authentic assessment tool that is based on The New York State Learning Standards and provides students with an opportunity to present portfolios of their work at regional adjudication sites. The student portfolios provide evidence of understanding and student learning in the visual arts. Feedback is available for the student, parent, school, and community. The Portfolio Project can provide an authentic source for data on student success in the visual arts.

Art Department Vision
The Whitney Point Art Department’s vision is grounded in the character-building values of persistence, perseverance, and innovation in order to foster creative, globally aware, artistically literate citizens. We aim for our students to develop respect and appreciation for cultural differences by delving into art spanning various cultures, time periods, and artists. Through a diverse array of opportunities, we inspire students to explore their passions, honing their talents while discovering possible careers in the vibrant world of art.
As a K-12 department, we implement the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts and vertically align our curriculum to provide rich, hands-on learning experiences for every student in the Whitney Point School District. Students will create original artwork, present their work through building and district displays, respond to their own work and the work of others through art analysis and critique, and connect their experiences to the community and the world around them.
