Whitney Point High School students making a thumbs up gesture as they stand with two officers from the Broome County Sheriffs Office in the high school gym.

Students got a chance to see how much a single drink actually changes your world on Friday, December 12, at WP High School. It’s more than just feeling "buzzed"—it’s a total system glitch. Students got to experience a hands-on, eye-opening experience that puts their coordination to the ultimate test!  This event was organized by the SADD Club in the High School.  The Broome County Against Drunk Driving sent two officers and the pedal cars to the school to present to students in their regular gym classes.

What Happened?
Students navigated a custom obstacle course in the gym while driving a pedal car wearing the Fatal Vision "Drunk Goggles." These specialized lenses simulate the visual distortion, slowed reaction time, and loss of balance caused by alcohol - without you ever taking a sip.

The Challenges set up in the high school gym:

  • The Puzzle Test: While wearing the drunk goggles students tried to put together a simple puzzle.

  • The Basketball Shot Test: Students also attempted to make a simple basketball shot while wearing the drunk goggles.

  • The Pedal Test: Finally, students experienced why "just one or two" is one or two too many. They saw how quickly the course turned into chaos when their brains and eyes stop talking to each other.

Many thanks to the Broome County Sheriff's Office for the experience and the lesson!
