Sixth-grade students recently put their creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork to the test during a hands-on engineering challenge that combined learning with a splash of fun. Working in small groups on January 29, students were tasked with designing and building a boat using only cardboard and waterproof duct tape. Their objective: create a vessel sturdy enough to float and carry them safely to the other side of the pool.
Before construction and testing began, the class reviewed essential water safety rules. Students discussed appropriate behavior around pools and open water, as well as the importance of communication, cooperation, and trust when participating in water-based activities. These conversations helped set expectations and reinforced the responsibility that comes with hands-on learning experiences.
Once designs were complete, teams carefully assembled their boats, adjusting plans as needed to improve balance and buoyancy. The testing phase brought excitement and plenty of learning opportunities as students observed what worked well, what needed improvement and how teamwork played a key role in success.
The activity provided an engaging way for students to apply science, engineering, and safety concepts in a real-world setting… proving that learning can be both educational and memorable when creativity and collaboration take center stage.
