A row of first graders wearing helmets at Caryl E. Adams Primary school in Whitney Point are lined up with their bicycles in the school gym as they participate in a bike-riding lesson as part of the All Kids Ride program in their physical education class.

First graders at Whitney Point Central School District recently built confidence, balance and independence while learning an important lifelong skill through the "All Kids Bike" program during physical education classes at Caryl E. Adams Primary School.

The program, brought to Whitney Point through a collaboration between the Broome-Tioga BOCES Professional Learning Innovation Center (PLIC) and the Whitney Point CSD Physical Education Department, teaches young students how to ride bicycles using a structured curriculum and specialized balance-to-pedal transition bikes.

Physical Education teacher Danielle Montesano first saw the program being used successfully in a neighboring school district and believed it would be a meaningful opportunity for Whitney Point students as well. She approached district administrators about bringing the initiative to Whitney Point so kindergarten and first grade Golden Eagles could learn the valuable skill of bicycle riding at an early age.

The program recently wrapped up in Ms. Montesano’s classes, but not before students experienced a memorable day that highlighted the strength of the Golden Eagle community.

During one class period, Whitney Point ninth graders visited the elementary school gym as part of the high school’s Freshman Academy program to assist the first graders with their riding lessons. The older students walked alongside the less confident riders, helping steady bicycles, offering encouragement and guiding students around the gym as they practiced balancing and pedaling.

The interaction created a special atmosphere as the younger students gained confidence with the support of their older peers, while the ninth graders embraced the opportunity to give back and serve as role models within the Whitney Point school community.

The "All Kids Bike" program focuses not only on physical activity and coordination, but also on building confidence, perseverance and independence in young learners.

As one unit concludes, another is already beginning for Whitney Point students. Ms. Montesano’s classes are now transitioning into their swimming unit, while Physical Education teacher Mr. Samsel’s classes are preparing to begin the bicycle-riding program this week.
