Many thanks to our friends at the Triangle and Whitney Point Volunteer Fire Departments. They stopped by last week for Fire Safety Week, teaching our students in Grades Pre-K through 3 how important fire safety is!
Whitney Point Fire EMS Captain Nicki Hoppes talked to the students about having a safety plan at home. If there was a fire in their home, they should get out of the house, know a safe place to meet once outside, and never, ever go back in!
Captain Hoppes was joined by firefighters Bethany Hoppes and Mike Reynolds from WPFD, as well as Triangle Volunteer Fire Department Chief Hason Hewitt Assistant Chief Chris Ryan, and EMS Captain Traci Hewitt.
Other lessons included knowing how to call 911 and how to "Stop, Drop, Cover Your Face and Roll" to put out flames on your clothing. Younger children can sometimes be afraid of a firefighter in full gear and may hide during a fire. So, after donning their fire suits and breathing apparatus, the firefighters demonstrated to our students that there was nothing to be frightened of because the firefighters are there to help. After the lessons, students had a chance to check out the fire trucks.
We are so grateful to these community volunteers who not only keep us safe but also give us their time to come and talk to our students about these vital topics!
