'PJ Drive' provides warm, caring gifts for homeless children

With that sentiment in mind, the morning program at Whitney Point’s Caryl E. Adams Elementary School launched a “PJ drive” as part of a service-learning project undertaken by kindergarteners with assistance from the Broome County Promise Zone. The youngsters spent the last part of the year collecting pajamas to donate to the homeless shelter run by the Volunteers of America. They titled the effort the “Sweet Dreams, Warm Wishes” project.

On Dec. 21, a VOC representative came to the school to personally accept the “proceeds” from the PJ drive. The donations will go to the homeless shelter and 10 residential sites both for daily use and holiday gifts. The VOA runs solely on donations, so the “Sweet Dreams, Warm Wishes” project was greatly appreciated.

The event was also attended by Whitney Point Village Mayor Ryan Reynolds, who signed a “certificate of kindness” recognizing all who helped make the pajama drive a heart-warming success.
