Annual 'Badminton for the Heart' raises money for AHA
The tournament raised $900 for the benefit of the American Heart Association and was organized by students who, without their involvement, none of it would have been possible.

We thank physical education teachers Stephen Samsel and Angela Wayne and the following organizations for their generosity: the U.S. Army for making gift bags, General Mills for donating healthy organic snacks, the American Heart Association for providing kickballs and basketballs to all entrants, the Hurd family of Broome-Tioga Motorcross for providing trophies, Dominic's Pizza and Sparky's for donating gift cards.

"We are very proud that the students have kept the spirit and tradition of the tournament going strong for 10 years now," said Samsel.

Samsel and Wayne promoted the tournament through PE classes and tied it in with Healthy Heart Month in February.

"Also, during PE classes, we taught and exposed all WP high school students to 'hands-only CPR' to further emphasize Healthy Heart Month and awareness to heart-related diseases," said Samsel. "This money is used to help heart-related diseases and those who suffer from these complications directly in the Whitney Point community. I try to get as much community involvement as I can and provide the kids with a safe, healthy activity."

Many students who worked with the set-up and breakdown of the courts fulfilled community service hours for their government classes.
