WP students attend leadership program in D.C.

The students were nominated by a teacher as good candidates for the program because of their leadership potential. The five-day program was an excellent opportunity to meet other students from different parts of the country and participate in workshops about leadership.

One of the highlights of the program was listening to a speech by a former NASA astronaut and senior scientist for the International Space Station. Other highlights included participating on a robotics team that utilized Legos and learning the elements of robotics design and construction and gaining an understanding of the basics of coding and programming.

The students practiced effective communicating, creative and critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. They also learned the importance of giving back by brainstorming with their team to identify a social issue that might be overcome through the use of robotics.

"Before I attended People to People, I didn't know what I want to go to college for," said McCall. "Now I know that I want to be an engineer."

Johnson added, "The program's robotics component was spectacular. Finally, we were taught how to build a robot. The program was very special and I met a bunch of new friends that I am still in contact with."

The students were accompanied by their families and enjoyed the opportunity to visit various Washington D.C. landmarks.
