Our seniors interested in attending SUNY Broome recently visited the campus and had the opportunity to learn about the travel opportunities available, clubs, activities, sports and campus events.  They were given a tour of the campus, saw the student support services department and were treated to lunch at American Dining Creations.  Many thanks to the SUNY Broome admissions staff and student ambassadors. [ for more]

TRA fourth-graders recently completed and published literary essays.  These pieces of writing show the deep thinking that readers to to understand the messages in text. The essays are on display outside of the classroom, and several adults and students have commented on how much they enjoy the writing! [ for more]

Students have been excited about the Iditarod sled dog race happening now in Alaska. This race serves as a high-interest topic to motivate students to read and write A LOT!  They have been learning about the history of the race, musher biographies, race rules, and reading and responding to many Iditarod articles.  Students chose mushers to follow and wrote about the character trait that describes his/her choice musher. They LOVE checking on the race at! [ for more]

The District was contacted by State Police that late on March 10 another Whitney Point High School Student was arrested and charged with terroristic threats. This arrest was made in connection with an ongoing investigation. There was no active threat made to the school.

As part of the 6th grade ELA curriculum, all students write creatively, alone or with partners, for submission to the ECHOES program. Submissions are reviewed by ECHOES, and student Valerie Barrows was chosen as a Showcased Author. Her piece was performed in front of grades 6-8. Several other 6th graders received Honorable Mention awards.
Several 7th grade students submitted original pieces of writing tot he ECHOES program in late fall.  These students devoted a few hours after school during the fall to work out their ideas and make their formal submissions.  Two of these students, Sarah Somers and Natalie McClenon, received Honorable Mentions the day of the performance at TRA.   Katelyn Merlin, grade 7, earned the Excellence in Writing Award.  These students' family members were in attendance at the performance to see their children receive these honors.

Student athletes Brent Isaacs, Victoria Petrie, John Sluznis and Madilyn Tiderencel represented Whitney Point at the Cooperstown Central School Leadership Training for Athletes program at the Clarks Sports Center.  The theme of the conference was "Positive Leadership is Powerful Leadership." The student athlete leaders engaged in workshop sessions, networked with others, participated in physical activities and discussed service learning projects.  The conference concluded with a very powerful message called "Sharing My Stones" presented by keynote speaker Marianne Angelillo. [ for more]
