Stephanie Hodkinson, our terrific TRA librarian, shared Fractured Fairy Tales with Mrs. Head's and Mrs. Ewald's second grade classes during Summer Enrichment!  Mrs. Hodkinson will visit many classrooms during Summer Enrichment to promote independent reading and literacy over the summer months.

Cornell Cooperative Extension's Agriculture in the Classroom representatives made a visit to our Summer Enrichment program to teach children about the source of dairy products and how butter is made. The students actually made their own butter by shaking a cup of heavy cream, and then enjoyed the butter on crackers as a healthy snack. They also got to pet 2 baby goats, Elsa and Anna!

The July issue of the New York State United Teachers publication includes an article about the area's Promise Zone program and Whitney Point High School student Mackenzie St. John. Mackenzie has found the Promise Zone's drop-in center to be a welcoming and supportive place that offers academic support and encourages positive behaviors.  Read the NYSUT article here.

Representatives from the United Way of Broome County made a special visit to Tioughnioga Riverside Academy Monday to give a brand-new book and book bag to students in kindergarten, first and second grade who are attending our summer enrichment program.  The books and book bags were purchased through donations and fundraising by the United Way to encourage local students to keep reading during the summer months. Many thanks to the United Way and those who helped support this initiative.

Landon Jeker, a WPHS graduate from the Class of 2018, recently completed an independent senior project that will have lasting impact on the high school.  Working with Mr. Sweeney and Mr. Prindle, Landon designed and built a wind tunnel capable of showing the forces produced on a wing. The goal was to prove that an aircraft can still control its yaw without the use of a vertical control surface as seen in the B-2 Spirit.  Click headline for more.

WPHS Class of 2018 graduate Katelyn Bowman is this year's recipient of the School-to-Careers Partnership Outstanding Student Award.  Every year, one student is chosen from each district in the Broome-Tioga BOCES region in recognition of their achievements in career-related programs and planning, community service and good citizenship. Congratulations, Katelyn!

Graduation time is here and we congratulate all the senior students graduating on June 22! For those of you attending graduation, we will once again be live-streaming the ceremony in the auditorium. This effort will help to accommodate more people and provide a more comfortable setting for some of our guests who might find the gymnasium a challenging setting.  We also plan to live-stream the ceremony online, so check our website for upcoming information.(continued)
